First room I was given (ground floor front) whilst quiet on first settling in turned out to be astoundingly noisy during the night (I was out with colleagues as in Glasgow for a conference - and didn't return until gone 10pm) as a result of a close-by night club. I endured a pretty awful time with thumping drum and bass which reverberated in my stomach until around 2.30-3am. I did go out to reception around 1.30am who explained about the club (not an insanely noisy party as I'd thought at first) but it was not possible to move me that late at night. The next morning the incredibly helpful and friendly manageress(?) was able to find me another room at the back overlooking the garden where I slept like a baby for the second night of my stay. McLays is large, rambling and 'basic' with fairly small rooms but spotlessly clean with effective radiators, kettle and tea/coffee in room, adequate supply of wall-plugs for phones etc. and good hot water supply (takes a little while to come through but all you could want when it gets out the tap), the staff are very friendly and helpful and the breakfast comes hot, fresh and plentiful. The location is excellent - very near to the City Centre and easily walkable from the train stations. Just beware 'the Garage' club (which apparently doesn't operate every night but you know it when it does if in a non-double glazed room pointing in the right (wrong) direction and if like me you are a fairly light sleeper. Apart from that couldn't fault it and would definitely use McLays again (as would my friend who recommended them to me).
