The Inn at Virginia Mason - Seattle
Excellent4.0 / 5
Reasonably priced hotel near downtown area
I was in Seattle for an academic conference at the Sheraton Hotel, and the conference organizers did everything to persuade us to stay there. I'm glad I made a different decision, as some of the conference-goers were complaining. A room at The Inn at Virginia Mason cost about 2/3 of the conference discount rate at the Sheraton. The Sheraton was about 10 mins' walk away (a bit longer for the uphill return). The Inn is of a good standard though not luxurious. Everything worked. Can't understand the gripes in some of the reviews on here. The Rhododendron Café is now open: the food is OK but a bit pricey and the dinner menu rather limited. Nevertheless it's pleasant place to eat, drink, or relax. (I didn't always feel like going back into town for dinner.) The only negative is that my room was not made up on one day. This was perhaps because I didn't leave a tip. The next day, when I left a tip, it was made up (and the tip gone). We Brits never get this right. We would normally expect to tip the chambermaids only at the end of the stay. I wish US hotels would be more explicit about their tipping policy - or better still pay staff adequately so that tips are unnecessary.
