What's Ouistreham like?
Located on the famous Normandy coastline, Ouistreham has its fair share of stunning sandy beaches where you can walk, sail, swim and sun bathe to your heart's content. Thalazur Ouistreham and Ouistreham Beach (or 'Ouistreham Plage') are two of the most popular seaside sites to visit. Ouistreham is also home to some great museums, many of them with a military focus, such as Le Grand Bunker Musee du Mur de l'Atlantique (the Museum of the Atlantic Wall) and the Musee du Debarquement no. 4 Commando. With plenty of great shops, cafes and restaurants to explore in the center of the town itself, Ouistreham has no shortage of things to do by day or night. The town has its own casino, and of course its own brandy, Calvados (Ouistreham is situated in the Calvados region of Normandy) which you can sample in almost any bar.
How to get along with locals in Ouistreham
French is the official language spoken in Ouistreham, so learning a few French phrases (such as 'bonjour': 'hello') will really help your trip to Ouistreham go well. If you really want to impress the locals, though, you can learn a couple of words of the Norman language, which a small percentage of the population still speaks in Ouistreham and other parts of Normandy. One useful word you might still hear, for instance, is 'mielle', which means sand dune or sandy land. The word for this in French is very different to the Norman one, but exactly the same as the English one: 'dune'. At Venere, we know all that there is to know about travelling to Ouistreham, and we used our local knowledge to bring you a fabulous selection of Ouistreham hotels to choose from.
