What's Giardini Naxos Like?
The area has a rich history going back to Roman times. The bay's location made it a favored spot to defend the island and this is reflected in Schisò Castle, built atop volcanic rock to keep an eye out for invading Corsairs. Similar thinking was behind Vignazza Tower, built in 1544 to protect against pirates. You can find out much more about the resort's rich history at the Archeological Museum, which has ample outdoor space featuring ruins from when the town was established by the Greeks in 735 BC. What better way to pass the time than soaking up the Sicilian sun while exploring an ancient culture. There are also many interesting finds displayed in the museum building. The church of Chiesa di Santa Maria Raccomandata is a beautiful 18th century building containing the 15th century masterpiece "Madonna di Porto Salvo". On Saturday mornings, try to catch the bustling market. You can also indulge in some scuba and snorkelling in the fabulous unspoiled coral reefs off and around the coast of Sicily.
Tips for Getting Along with Locals in Giardini Naxos
You should follow the Sicilian code of conduct to interact with locals, although in this highly tourist oriented resort they are perhaps less conservative than in more rural locations. A simple handshake is the norm when greeting; only when you know a person well would you exchange kisses on the cheek (left, then right). Bear in mind Catholic sensibilities are deeply ingrained in the island and always treat religious sites with respect (ie by covering up exposed shoulders and legs). You should dress well for occasions such as dinner, as personal appearance is reflective of your status in life. With that in mind, check out our great range of Giardini Naxos hotels today.
