Heidelberg is a town in the State of Baden-Württemberg, and is home to Germany's oldest University. Formerly residence of the Electorate of the Palatinate, a powerful city state within the Holy Roman Empire, Heidelberg is popular among tourists due to its romantic and picturesque scenery and baroque architecture. Unlike many other German towns and cities, Heidelberg came out of the Second World War unscathed, and the red roofed buildings throughout the area form an idyllic view which paint a picture of the 17th century. The town has plenty of historical attractions to enjoy, as well as plenty of shopping streets and a lively nightlife. It can be a daunting task finding your ideal hotel in Heidelberg, especially if you have certain expectations when it comes to budget. With Venere, you can feel rest assured that you will find the perfect hotel for you, as you can look through thousands of user submitted reviews, photo galleries, and locations via Google maps.

History buffs especially will enjoy the town, as every street is infused with history and culture. Altstadt (Old Town) is the most iconic landmark in the town, and begins in Sofienstrasse and leads all the way up to the castle, with the town's University situated within its heart. At the end of Old Town lies Heidelberg Castle, which saw construction begin in the 13th century. Shoppers will be delighted to see Marktplatz (Market Square) with its many family owned stalls and boutiques.
Tips for Getting Along with Locals in Heidelberg
The atmosphere in Heidelberg is lively and outgoing, thanks in part to the large student and tourist presence. Although all of the signs and directions will of course be in German, many of the locals will speak English, however, it would be advisable to either learn a few key German phrases or bring a pocket phrase book. Comfortable walking shoes would be a good investment as you could spend hours exploring the town center, which can easily be traversed on foot. The Summer months take place from June to August, and during the day temperatures will typically rise to approximately 20°C. There are two tourist information offices in the city, one on Willy-Brandt-Platz 1 and the other on Marktplatz 10. Be sure to check with the Venere website before you depart, as you can use our Google maps applet to enjoy a virtual tour of the area around your hotel.
