What's Pismo Beach like?
Nicknamed the “Bakersfield Riviera” for the throngs of vacationers from nearby central California, this beach town is a favorite for locals and far away travelers. With roughly 20 miles of white sandy beaches, Pismo Beach offers stunning ocean views as well as its famous 1,200 foot pier. Called the Pismo Beach Pier, this massive wooden pier is great for a stroll or hours of fishing. Surfers and humpback whales can also be spotted around the pier, though the whales are limited to June as they make their way up north. Monarch butterflies can also be seen in Pismo Beach as they winter in the coastal town’s eucalyptus trees from October to February. Not far from the Monarch Butterfly Grove, you can take a Hummer tour or ride ATVs on the Oceana sand dunes. Most activities revolve around the sun sand, and waves in this California town but Pismo Beach also offers activities like skydiving, scuba, golf, and horseback riding. Pismo Beach is just a short drive from the vineyards and mineral springs around San Luis Obispo County.
Tips for Getting Along with Locals in Pismo Beach
Pismo Beach is home to fewer than 10,000 residents, but this California beach town is full of life and thrives on tourism. While these friendly beach-dwellers happily host tourists year-round, spring and fall are less crowded times in Pismo Beach. Like most of California’s coast, Pismo Beach is prone to what locals call “June gloom” as the marine fog tends to come ashore in the early summer. Clear skies take over in mid-July and typically stay around through the fall. Locals suggest checking out Monarch Butterfly Grove or the lesser known Dinosaur Caves, on opposite sides of the town. Dinosaur Caves Park is an 11-acre park with a playground, walking trails, and stunning multicolored cliffs and caves. Another local favorite is Eldwayen Ocean Park for its seclusion but the water can get rough in this area. Eldwayen is one of several Shell Beach Parks, known by locals for their peacefully quiet beaches, not too far from many ideal Pismo Beach hotels. No matter when you visit, you’re sure to enjoy sunny Pismo Beach.
